_03 Vierge Noir a Minuit

Route map here

After having a new set of Marzocchi Bomber forks in sexy stealth black (see first photo) sitting in my room for the last three months, I finally bought the little adapter that I required to fit them, having done so and having fitted them I decided it was high time to try them out…. at 11:30pm, any time is time for a bike ride right?

When I was deciding where to go, I had only the descent I wanted to do in mind, La Vierge Noir which is the closest once to my house (a good one at that) and can be done in little over an hour. Thinking like this made me completely forget about what the ascent entailed… This meant going through La Bastille which is an old military fort on the hill to the North of Grenoble. This meant going through some little staircases and tunnels up on the mountain side after midnight, alone!

I realised I would have to pass through the slightly spooky (where people have almost certainly died at some point) tunnels and buildings when I was about halfway up… I seriously contemplated going back. I have only recently gotten used to riding alone at night, if you don’t understand why I was scared then please go and have a walk or ride through the woods, in the dark, all alone, at night and tell me you are not scared. I decided I would man the f*ck up and get myself up there, after all I really wanted to try my new forks!

However when I arrived at the door to the tunnels I certainly contemplated going back for a few minutes, but another dosage of man up forced me to go through them and up the stairs. Of course once you go past the first part it is fine but I was still a little wary of what might be round the corner… thankfully no homeless guys or ghosts to scare the shit out of me and I even had time to stop and take a few photos.

The door to oblivion...?

Spooky to say the least!

And yeh, smashed it on the downhill,  because why not.
